The country singer Glen Campbell died on Tuesday at the age of 81

 
Legendary country singer Glen Campbell has sadly passed away at the age of 81.Campbell, whose impressive career spanned over 50 years, died earlier today (August 8) after a "long and courageous battle" with Alzheimer's disease.In a statement on Campbell's official website, his family confirmed "with the heaviest of hearts" the passing of "our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist".Announcing that a "personal statement" from his wife of 35 years will soon follow, the family also asked for "prayers and respect for their privacy at this time".

The singer-songwriter, who was born in Arkansas, sold over 45m records over the course of a career that spanned more than 60 years. A statement from Campbell’s family on his website read: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.”
